Leonardo DiCaprio Is Going To Mars, At Least That’s What He Told Obama

Leonardo DiCaprio recently brought his climate change activism to the White House as part of the South by South Lawn festival.
As part of the festival, DiCaprio, President Obama, and atmospheric scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe spoke on a panel discussing climate change and DiCaprio’s new documentary, Before the Flood.
DiCaprio filmed much of the documentary in the Canadian Arctic, in locations that are seeing drastic changes to temperature and sea level.
Dicaprio said of his documentary:

“This film was developed to show the devastating impact that climate change is having on our planet and more importantly what can be done. Our intention for the film was for it to be released before this upcoming election because, after experiencing firsthand the devastating impacts of climate change worldwide, we, like many of you here today, realize that urgent action must be taken.”

It’s clear that DiCaprio is taking this activism, and the threat of climate change, very seriously. He went on to talk about the role that politicians play in this:

“The scientific consensus is in, and the argument is now over. If you do not believe in climate change, you do not believe in facts, or science, or empirical truths. Therefore, in my humble opinion, [you] should not be allowed to hold public office.”

DiCaprio let it slip that he had signed up for Elon Musk’s Mars program after Dr. Hayhoe dismissed the idea.
As Hayhoe said of the Mars expededition, “I don’t want to know if anyone has. I think you’re crazy.” DiCaprio bluntly claimed, “I did.”
The idea of space travel is does seem crazy, we’d have to agree with Dr. Hayhoe about that. But perhaps we haven’t spent enough time in the Arctic circle, seeing ice slowly melt away.
Regardless, Leo is doing very admirable work in his effort to combat climate change and that he graced the same stage as President Obama is pretty cool.
We’d just prefer if he stayed on this planet and kept making movies.
